DIY Black Scoop Back Nettie Bodysuit

I have been eyeing the Nettie bodysuit pattern by Closet Case Files ever since it was first released and finally got around to buying it a few of weeks ago. I really love the fitted silhouette–especially the low back. I think it will be great for wearing under full skirts with a fitted waistband.

The fabric is a four way stretch with a little bit of sheen. I bought it at the FIDM scholarship shop in downtown LA. If you live in LA I highly recommend checking the shop out. The fabric section is really small but the prices are great (about $2 a yard for knits!). They had a lot of swimsuit fabrics when I was there plus some upholstery fabric and a very small selection of trim/notions.

I chose to make this bodysuit with a high neck front, mid-low back and three quarter length sleeves. I made a shelf bra just in case the back was too low to cover a bra and as a practice for making one (my first!). It's really easy to make the shelf bra btw. In these photos I'm actually wearing a regular bra in addition to the shelf bra. I like to get as much support as I can and a shelf bra doesn't really cut. Only after I took these photos did I realize that my bra was giving me some unsightly rolls in the back. Ugh. I would love to do a version of the bodysuit with a super low back and a built in bra with full support. I've bought a couple of bra inserts and I'm experimenting but I don't think I've found a real solve yet. I will keep you posted!

I initially added about 2 inches to the length because I'm tall and I usually add about that much to the bodice length of a garment. When I tried it on though it was much too long. So I shortened it by about a 1.5 inch and attached the leg bindings. It's still a little bit too long and I think next time, if my fabric has the same amount of stretch, I won't add to the length at all. I think I could also take it in a bit at the waist, as it is a little baggy there. The shoulders, sleeves and bust however fit quite well.

For my next Nettie, I think I'll try a sleeveless version with the scoop in the front and a fabric without the sheen. I love it but it's a little too activewear for everyday. Have you tried this pattern out? How do you wear your bodysuit?
