DIY Sweetheart T-shirt — A review of the Seamwork Goldie

Hello sew-friends! Just a quick post today to share a knit top that I sewed a couple of months ago. I love the style of this top and it was really fun and quick to sew. The last few years, I've been wearing more loose fitting, very casual clothes and it's been fun to wear something more form fitting. I used the Seamwork Goldie, which features negative ease, a deep sweetheart neckline and puffed sleeves.

FABRIC

The fabric is a stretchy rib knit that I picked up from the remnant bin at Joann's. The weird thing about the fabric is that the ribs go horizontal to the selvage, instead of the standard vertical. Because I only had about of yard of fabric, I had to be very careful with my pattern placement and could only cut a three-quarter length sleeve.

Otherwise the fabric was easy to work with. Unfortunately, it has already started to pill. So I wouldn't really recommend it. We can probably consider this more of a "wearable muslin" than the most perfect make.

PATTERN

I used the Goldie pattern from Seamwork. I made a size 10 but now looking at the size chart and considering my current 39.5" bust, I probably should have made a size 12. Thankfully, it's a forgiving stretchy fit! And I'm happy with the sizing.

The Goldie was really easy to sew together. I've sewn a lot of t-shirts and this is pretty similar just with some extra details. The center front is gathered with a piece of elastic and the sleeves have gathers at the shoulder. I used a combination of my conventional sewing machine (with a walking foot) and a serger to sew this. This pattern does have a sewalong in the Seamwork community, if you need extra support.

Seamwork started out as a monthly online magazine and has morphed into an online community and resource. They still release (about) two new patterns a month and there's a huge catalogue of patterns to choose from. If I'm looking for a particular pattern, I always go to Seamwork first to see if they have something similar. I've been a Seamwork member since it started and I really appreciate having access to the library of patterns, the forums and sewalongs.

You can sign up for Seamwork here and get half off the Unlimited plan. (If you sign up using my link, I will receive a small commission.)

Even though this top is fairly simple to sew and the instructions are really great, I do want to share a few tutorials from my blog that might help you along the way. You can scroll through them below.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I really love the design of this shirt and would definitely recommend that pattern and I'd make it again. It’s a great variation on the basic t-shirt both for styling and sewing. If you’ve sewn a t-shirt before and want to try something a little more challenging, I’d definitely give this pattern a try. Happy sewing!
