Inspired by the Tie One On "No $$" apron theme, I whipped up this ruffly apple print apron. The theme requires using only materials that you already own, hence no money is allowed to be spent. Upon reading the theme, I immediately knew I would use this fabric.
About 5 years ago, I cut up this vintage cotton apple print to make a pleated hem skirt. I abandoned it I guess because I decided I would never wear a skirt covered in apples? Anyway, the pieces have been sitting around for years, begging to be used appropriately.
The skirt of the apron is the main body of the skirt with pleats where the seams and darts were in the skirt. The ruffles and bib are made from the pleated hem. The pale yellow striped ties are a stash remnant fabric. The apron came together organically from the bottom up. I made a few sketches but the end result is not like any of them. I decided on the ruffled bib on a whim, as a way to balance the full skirt. The apron has a homey look and the ruffles are a little bit over the top which is perfectly acceptable (and delightful) for an apple print apron.
