Tips for Using Pinterest

About a year ago, I posted a list of 13 Tips for How to Use Pinterest and Gain Followers. I thought it was about time to revisit the topic and give you an update. Since that post, Pinterest has updated their site, both online and mobile, and my Pinterest followers have increased from about 1,500 to over 11,500. None of my tips are scientifically proven, but they've worked for me!

Reading back over my original post, all of my tips are still helpful. I'll quickly recap the big five here and add a couple things I've noticed over the last year. Go back and read the original post for all the details.

1. Follow people whom you admire

Follow people who pin beautiful things and you'll have plenty of eye-candy to re-pin and inspire.

2. Pin often

One of the changes Pinterest has made over the last year, is a pop-up after you pin an image that shows one person who has also pinned that image. After the pop-up was added, I noticed my followers started increasing more quickly. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that the pop-up will only link to people who pinned from the original site as opposed to repinning. So pin often, and you'll be more likely to pop up when another user pins.

3. Be strategic

It's all about the visuals on Pinterest, so only pin great photos. Also, arrange your pinboards so the best, most seasonally relevant ones are at the top of your profile page. It's what people will see first so don't make them search for the good stuff. Be consistent and people will have a reason to follow you.

4. Make your pins and pinboards searchable

Use common keywords when naming your pinboards as well as when describing your pinboards and pins. People will be able to find you more easily with keywords.

5. Join group boards

On days when I pin to a group board, I often notice a big bump in followers to my own related pinboard. For example if I pin to a Packaging board, I get more followers to my own packaging board. So join some group boards and pin to them occasionally. Don't overpin to a group board, that can be annoying to the other members.

In conclusion, I want to give a BIG thank you to all of my Pinterest followers. I truly appreciate that you choose to see my photos in your feed and I hope that you enjoy all of my pins. If you haven't already, check out my Pinterest profile and maybe follow me. :)
